Steve Gibson Gives The Kindle 5 Stars
I was reading Kindle reviews on the Amazon site and I noticed a rather lengthy review by a guy named Steve Gibson. My first thought was “hmm, I wonder if this is the Steve Gibson from Security Now”, a frequent guest on many technology shows and a pioneer in the field.
I didn’t have to wonder long because he answered my question in the second paragraph of the review. Here’s a quote from the beginning of the review:
This is less a “pros and cons” review than a hopefully useful commentary about the Kindle compared with other eReaders and what it means for the eBook industry. (I believe that everything has changed with the Kindle’s creation.)
For many years I have been an avid reader of eBooks using almost every eReading device on the market. So as an early-adopter of techie gadgets I had been anxiously awaiting Amazon’s Kindle since its first rumors. So I immediately purchased it both out of curiosity and hoping for a better “next generation” eBook solution. In case you’re wondering whether I’m “that” Steve Gibson, I probably am — I’m the guy who gets Google’s first three or four links when Googling my name.
You can read the rest over at the Amazon site. The Kindle really seems to be the device of the future.

5 stars? why they make me independent to buy books from them and to read what they like in rss mode .. blogs and news. In my contry english is not the oficial language. I think this ereader is more useful for people how speack english . 5 stars means you are free to do with your e-reader what do you like. Without any conditions! Tell me please if Kindle have search function (word) in text.
Best regards
Tony
Tony one of the main advantages of the Kindle is Whispernet which is the Kindles free EVDO service. Best sellers can be downloaded instantly for 9.99. Unfortunately this service is only available in the US. Rumor has it that Kindle is currently working on a UK version next. The main reason that the launch is in one country at a time is because of complicated copyright laws on books for each country. If you are in another country then the Whispernet will not work and you would have to purchase a Kindle book online and then upload it to your computer.
The Kindle eBooks have DRM (filetype: .AZW), but it supports unprotected Mobipocket books (.MOBI, .PRC), .TXT files, HTML, and Word. Some files can be transferred over USB. While others have to be emailed to the special per-device Kindle email to be converted to a special Kindle format. For instance eBooks in pdf format have to be converted using the Kindle email technique or else you can convert them to mobi at home.
Kindle has lots of search functions I’m not sure if it has exactly what your looking for. But in the future I will do a post about using Kindle for search.
You are right for non US countries and non English readers the Kindle is not that great. In fact it is currently only being sold in the US.
It is a fantastic book reader with lots of functions but it will not meet everyone’s needs. If you are not able to take advantage of the ease of purchasing Kindle books. Or don’t want to purchase books and want to download free books in many formats and languages. Maybe what you really want is a mini laptop with a wireless card from a cell phone company.
The Kindle is a cool ereader but it is not everything to everybody.
I already got one netbook … Iliat is to expensive, Bebook and Eslick doesn’t have search function in text, the only e-reader I whanted now is Sony 700BC. The platform of Plastic logic is not readu get. I will be in second part of this year but the selling will be more accelerate in 2010(!!!!). I realy need to buy 1 e-reader. I need it! but I must wait…
